Il 2 dicembre 2025 il Ministro della Cultura Alessandro Giuli ha nominato Gaetano Sabatini Direttore dell’Istituto Storico Italiano per l’Età Moderna e Contemporanea. Gaetano Sabatini è dal 2006 Professore Ordinario di Storia Economica presso l’Università degli Studi Roma Tre, di cui é stato, tra l’altro, membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione e Pro-Rettore alle Relazioni istituzionali; precedentemente ha insegnato in Italia presso le Università dell’Aquila e Sapienza di Roma e all’estero in Università e centri di ricerca in Spagna, Portogallo, Francia, Argentina, Brasile, Messico, India e Stati Uniti. È Investigador Correspondente del CHAM, Centro de Humanidades della Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Esperto di storia della finanza in età moderna e contemporanea, con particolare riferimento all’Italia nell’età spagnola e al mondo ibero-americano, è autore di 6 monografie e oltre 300 titoli comparsi in 5 lingue. È tra i fondatori e coordinatori generali di “Red Columnaria”, la maggiore rete di centri di ricerca sulla storia delle monarchie iberiche tra XVI e XVIII secolo, ed editor di “The Journal of European Economic History”. È membro della Giunta Direttiva dell’Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani. Dal 1 luglio 2020 al 30 giugno del 2024 è stato Direttore dell’ISEM, Istituto di Storia dell’Europa Mediterranea del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche. Dal 23 luglio del 2024 è membro del Consiglio Direttivo e Scientifico dell’Istituto Storico Italiano per l’Età Moderna e Contemporanea.

On December 2, 2025, the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, appointed Gaetano Sabatini as Director of the Italian Historical Institute for Modern and Contemporary History. Gaetano Sabatini has been a Full Professor of Economic History at Roma Tre University since 2006, where he has also served as a member of the Board of Directors and Pro-Rector for Institutional Relations; previously, he taught in Italy at the Universities of L’Aquila and Sapienza University of Rome, and abroad at universities and research centers in Spain, Portugal, France, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, India, and the United States. He is a Corresponding Researcher at CHAM, the Center for Humanities of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. An expert in the history of finance in the modern and contemporary eras, with particular reference to Italy during the Spanish period and the Ibero-American world, he is the author of 6 monographs and over 300 publications in 5 languages. He is among the founders and general coordinators of “Red Columnaria,” the largest network of research centers on the history of the Iberian monarchies between the 16th and 18th centuries, and editor of “The Journal of European Economic History”. He is a member of the Governing Board of the National Institute of Roman Studies. From July 1, 2020, to June 30, 2024, he was Director of ISEM, the Institute of History of Mediterranean Europe of the National Research Council. Since July 23, 2024, he has been a member of the Governing and Scientific Council of the Italian Historical Institute for Modern and Contemporary History.
